The time has come to ready the garden for spring, and many gardeners are keen on finding low-maintenance ways to get gorgeous blooms in their outdoor space. It takes time, effort and dedication to figure out the care requirement for each plant species, reports Express.co.uk.

However, there are some plants that require less work than others and can make great additions to your outdoor landscape. Taking to his YouTube channel, Irish gardener Niall Gardens, shared some of his top picks that people “absolutely need to grow”.

“Over time you can easily build your own collection of great plants,” he said. “Plants that are going to give you tasty food, loads of colour and scent from flowers and most of all, fill your garden all year around.”

Lupins

Lupins are described as the flowers that keep giving, as they are loved for their vibrant spikes. These flowers are also very resilient, growing in a range of climates, making them a good choice for new gardeners.

The first weeks of March are ideally the best time to grow these flowers but the Gardeners World website says they can also be planted as late as April.

“Even in year one, they’re going to produce some spires of flowers.” said Niall, "Once you get them in the ground they require minimal maintenance.”

The Royal Horticultural Society recommends the plants should be placed in the soil at the same depth they were in the container. Planted correctly, the plants will produce columns of flowers ranging from deep aubergine to pastel pinks.

Hardy annuals

More great plants that are easy to grow from seeds are hardy annuals, which produce long-lasting blooms.

“Hardy annuals are the perfect choice to get colour into your garden really quickly," explained Niall.

"Sow them now and you’re going to have loads of gorgeous flowers in a matter of a few short months.

“If you choose a hardy annual, that’s going to be tough enough to survive the cold, so you don’t need to worry about nurturing them too much. It makes them really easy to grow.”
