Organisers of Yealmpton Show are hoping for another stellar turnout when the much-loved one-day event returns later this month, with the deadline for entries fast approaching.
Always the last Wednesday in July, the 134th renewal will be held once again at Kitley Lawns just outside Yealmpton on Wednesday, July 26, by kind permission of the Bastard family.
Over the course of its long history, Yealmpton Show has only ever been halted by two World Wars, outbreaks of foot and mouth disease, the Covid-19 pandemic and occasional severe inclement weather.
Last year’s show was the busiest ever, mostly due to a pandemic-enforced hiatus in 2020 and 2021, with large crowds resulting in major traffic delays.
Organisers say that they have addressed the issues experienced in 2022. “We’ve allowed extra lanes for parking traffic once you’re on the show field. Last year was our busiest show ever and it caught us out,” a spokesperson for the event said. “Just like other big agricultural shows and large music / sport events held around Devon, the same thing happens - traffic queues. There’s only one main route to the Yealmpton Show (the A379), so we suggest is if you want to get in earlier, leave in plenty of time.”
Set in the grounds of the Kitley Estate, there will be a fantastic array of attractions, competitions and entertainment taking place over the course of the day.
In the large main ring, Land Rover and Devon Gundog displays will be followed by the Squibb Freestyle Stunt Team performing at 1.30pm and 4pm, with British Motocross Freestyle Champion Jamie Squibb and his fellow riders set to wow the crowds as they perform airborne and ground-based stunts.
The grand parade of prize-winning livestock will be held at 3.30pm, with the judging of the supreme horse championship at 4.30pm and the Pony Club Mounted Games bringing the programme to a close at 5pm.
Hundreds of beef and dairy cattle, goats, horses and sheep will be judged and presented with their prizes; with dogs and smaller pets including guinea pigs, rabbits and budgerigars also able to compete.
A diverse selection of tradestands with everything from agricultural machinery to pest control, candles to clothing and garden furniture to fudge, will be in attendance and alongside that the countryside, homecraft, horticultural and rural skills marquees will offer plenty of opportunities to explore.
This year’s Yealmpton Show will also welcome the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association’s (RCAA) Farm and Country Trailer, essentially a mobile classroom designed to help educate primary school children about the ‘field to fork’ journey.
Yealmpton Show is held at Kitley Lawns, Yealmpton (PL8 2NN). Entry is charged at £15 for adults (£13 advanced), £5 for children aged five to sixteen (£4 advanced) and under fives enter free. Competitor entries have been extended to 11:59pm on the night of Friday, July 7, with cattle exhibitor entries due to close on Thursday, July 20 and horticultural entries closing on Saturday, July 22.
