A man has been convicted at court for a spree of stealing which included taking 10 bottles of Champagne from Marks & Spencer. He was one of dozens of people appearing at the magistrates' courts across Devon in the past week.
One man was sent to jail for a window smashing spree in Exeter. There were also a number of shoplifters and drink drivers.
All criminal cases start at the magistrates. The most serious are sent to crown court. Most defendants are dealt with by fines or court orders. Magistrates have the power to send people to prison for up to 12 months.

Moira Breading, Courtfield Close, West. Hill. Age: 56. On 13/02/2024 at West Hill drove when alcohol level above limit. Plea: Guilty. Community order for three months. Abstain from alcohol for 90 days. Disqualified for 23 months. Fined £1,000.
Deanna Cook, Bridestowe, Okehampton. Age: 58. On 11/12/2023 at Wye Road, Lewdown, drove whilst unfit through drink. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Abstain from alcohol for 120 days. Disqualified for 42 months. Fined £2,000.

Anton Cobham, HMP Long Lartin. Age: 25. On 13/09/2023 at Exeter assaulted a police officer and hospital worker by beating. Plea: Guilty. Prison for four months. Compensation £150.
Luke Taylor, NFA Exeter. Age: 35. On 21/09/2023 and other dates shoplifting in Exeter, including stealing 10 bottles of Champagne from Marks & Spencer. Plus assault. Plea: Guilty. 29 weeks suspended for 12 months.
Mustafa Zorba, Woodland Drive, Exeter. Age: 55. On 03/03/2024 at Exeter drove when alcohol level above the limit. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for 14 months. Amount of fine £200.

Ben Chappell, c/o Corporation Street, Combe Martin. Age: 32. On 13/04/2023 at Ilfracombe make off without payment for fuel payment. Plea: Guilty. Fined £60, compensation £20, costs £135.
Sam Turner, Bowhay, Black Torrington. Age: 40. On 23/08/2023 at Black Torrington sent an offensive WhatsApp. Plea: Guilty. Fined £507.
Kyle Tappin, a caravan in Landkey. Age: 37. On 01/03/2024 at Lankey drove when alcohol above the limit. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for 20 months. Fined £120.
Claire Davies, Taw View, Fremington. Age: 48. On 02/03/2024 at Fremington drove when alcohol level above limit. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Unpaid work for 90 hours. Disqualified for 26 months.
JonPaul Davis, NFA, Ilfracombe. Age: 29. On 25/07/2023 at Ilfracombe assault by beating. Plea: Guilty. Defendant has died. Offence withdrawn.

MARCH 27
Paul Edmundson, Torquay. Age: 38. On 27/03/2024 was sentenced to two years in prison at Exeter Crown Court for battery, actual bodily harm, two counts of criminal damage, and possessing an axe in a public space.
