Devon seaside holidays from 60 years ago
Our nostalgic pictures capture the joys of beach days out
It may still be boiling hot as the unexpected heatwave continues to sizzle in Devon but the summer holidays have come to an end and the children are back at school. It has been another summer where people flocked to the beaches when the weather allowed or had a seaside break with family and friends.
Devon has long been a popular destination for relaxing breaks by the seaside. And while the cost might be vastly different, the appeal of getting away from it all for a few days hasn’t changed since our pictures were taken 60 years ago.
Apart from being in black and white, the stunning views and happy smiles of visitors remain the same at stunning Sandy Bay at Exmouth - although some things have definitely moved on.
Check out the 1960s fashions and hairdos, the old-style caravans and cars and the 20th-century campsite facilities in these charming images from the archives. Which bits do you remember? Which ones do you miss? Do you recognise anyone in the photographs? Do let us know in the comments below.
