Residents in a rural Mid Devon village are being asked if they should become a town. Burlescombe Council has launched a public consultation to hear thoughts on this possibility. The consultation will be open until September 30.
A statement from the council said: “Burlescombe has grown significantly in recent times, and the council believes town status would better reflect its evolving identity and future aspirations. The town boasts a rich history, with evidence dating back centuries, including its 19th-century canal and quarry industries. Becoming a town would not only acknowledge this past but also serve as a symbol of Burlescombe's present importance and potential.
“The council's responsibilities have grown considerably over time, with the number of areas they manage expanding from just four to a much more substantial fourteen. Town status could lead to increased focus from the government, potentially bringing more business, development opportunities, and improved facilities and services for the local community.

“The council assures residents that there are no negative consequences to consider. They emphasise that the change is primarily symbolic, better reflecting the council's current role and goals”
The process of becoming a town involves following guidelines set out by the Local Government Act and the National Association of Local Councils. This includes a vote by the council itself to approve the change.
The council states: “Becoming a town could have a significant impact on Burlescombe's future. The council is urging all residents to participate in the consultation and share their opinions. This is your chance to help shape the town's identity and direction.”
