The perfect date spot isn't just for Valentine's Day. Devon is full of romantic places ideal for a visit all-year round - from picturesque towns and historic buildings to beautiful beaches.
If you're looking for inspiration, a holiday company reckons it's found Devon's five most romantic spots - as rated by couples on Tripadvisor. Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays looked at the percentage of reviews from visits by couples awarding them the maximum five-star rating.

1. Coleton Fishacre
Taking the top spot is the National Trust's 1920s country retreat Coleton Fishacre near Kingswear. The holiday company said it was rated highly by couples. The house is in the Arts and Crafts style, imbued with Art Deco elegance and also has a tropical garden by the sea.
The Royal Horticultural Society accredited garden boasts paths weaving past tranquil ponds and tropical plants.

2. Woolacombe Beach
Placing second is the three-mile stretch of sands at Woolacombe on the North Devon coast. It's said to be perfect for romantic strolls or watching the sunset.

3. Valley of the Rocks
The U-shaped valley with a dramatic section of coastline can be found on the northern edge of Exmoor, around half a mile from Lynton. It boasts some of England’s highest sea cliffs and is famous for its free-roaming herd of goats, unusual rock formations and incredible views.
Mother Meldrum’s Cafe provides a range of refreshments and you'll also find public toilets and a picnic area at the Lynton end of the valley.

4. Lundy Island
In fourth place is peaceful Lundy Island, lying 12 miles off the coast of North Devon. At just three miles long and half a mile wide the island - owned by the National Trust and managed by the Landmark Trust - is home to fascinating array of wildlife amidst dramatic scenery.

5. Lydford Gorge
Situated halfway between Okehampton and Tavistock, the National Trust's Lydford Gorge is the deepest river gorge in the South West, with a picturesque 30m high waterfall. It's been designated as a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) for its geology, flora and fauna and the gorge is filled with temperate rainforest,
The holiday company says this makes for the "perfect backdrop for a romantic walk".

To come up with the top five, researchers compiled a list of 60 popular places in Devon and analysed TripAdvisor reviews for each using the ‘couples’ type of visit filter. They examined reviews for those with over 100 reviews to find the percentage of couples who rated the place as five stars out of all couple reviews.
