A doctor will assess the mental state of a burglar who killed a dog during a frenzied attack in Devon. Alexandru Balea, 23, of South Street, Woolacombe, was due to be sentenced for three offences at Exeter Crown Court on Monday.
But the case was adjourned for the preparation of a psychiatric report. Balea will now be sentenced in May.
The defendant previously appeared at the magistrates' court where he pleaded guilty to burglary, criminal damage and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. He has been held in custody since his arrest.
Judge Stephen Climie told the defendant he was facing a significant sentence of imprisonment and a pre-sentence report had suggested mental health issues.
He added: "This is a serious case. You have serious issues as well that need to be considered by a professional psychiatrist, in my view and the view of the probation service."

The defendant killed a pet dog during a break-in at a home in Woolacombe, in North Devon on February 22. Horrified occupants returned home to find that their pet had been fatally injured by an intruder.
Devon and Cornwall Police appealed for information following the crime. Officers said that the break-in took place between 10am and 6.50am, while the occupants were out. Alcohol was taken from the property.
Balea was remanded in custody. He will be sentenced at Exeter Crown Court on May 17.
