A TV star feared for his life after he was attacked by locals in Congo whilst researching for a book on monsters. Dom Joly, known for hidden camera and spoof shows like Trigger Happy and Fool Brittania, was attacked with a machete when he travelled to the northern region of Congo.
The 56-year-old personality, who lives in the Cotswolds, was writing his 2023 book ‘The Conspiracy Tourist’ when he entered Congo. He was looking for a monster which habited Lake Tele in north Congo.
However his journey would prove tricky. After a three-day canoe trip to the village near the lake, the village demanded that they have a party with a special jungle alcoholic beverage, the Mirror reports.

He said: “Everyone got really violent. The guy that was supposed to take me the next day, attacked me with a machete and was tied to a tree. I was on my own as it was for my book, I didn’t have a TV crew with me or anything.”
Dom described the experience as “one of my most scary moments” as he prepares for his upcoming tour, based on his book. His tour begins in February and runs until March 28.
He appeared on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2010 where he finished in ninth. Back in March 2021 viewers were left stunned as Dom managed to win £50,000 after the Chasers stumbled on a question.
The comedian was on Beat The Chasers after previously appearing on The Chase against Shaun Wallace, aka the Dark Destroyer in 2012. Dom had won £10,000 on the cash builder, but decided to go for the higher offer of £89,000 and crashed out of the competition.
On his second attempt, Dom got two questions correct out of five and went for the highest offer again of £50,000 against all five Chasers. Dom was stunned when he won £50,000 for charity, leaving 30 seconds left on the clock.
