Loo with a view sells for more than eight times the guide price
Offering more than eight times the original guide price, the winning bidder was feeling flush and spent more than a penny on the former public loos with a view
A loo with a view has been sold for an amazing £169,000 at auction - more than eight times its asking price of £20,000. These public toilets are by the sea at Long Rock and have lovely views of St Michael's Mount and Mount's Bay.
They were being sold by Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers. As the auction went into its final hours, the scenic conveniences created a bidding war, with potential buyers apparently feeling flush. Ultimately, the winning bidder spent more than just a penny, splashing out £169K for the former loos with an incredible view.
Back in January, Cornwall Council said it was a "rare and exciting" chance to buy this property near Penzance. The toilets are right by the sea on the coast path at Long Rock and they look out at the beautiful sea.
Before the auction, Katie Semmens, the senior auction appraiser, said: "This is a rare and exciting opportunity to acquire this freehold detached former block of public conveniences with land to either side. Located in a truly spectacular position on the seafront, it boasts stunning views towards St Michael's Mount and Mount's Bay.
"Sometimes these kinds of places are sold at auctions but it's not often they're in such a special spot. They could be used for different things in the future, but you'd need the right permissions first."
The freehold detached former block of public conveniences comes with 0.12 acres of land and is marketed as being "located in a truly spectacular position on the seafront, boasting picturesque views towards St Michael's Mount and Mount's Bay."
In 2018, a former toilet block in Newlyn with a sea view sold for £73k - nearly five times its initial asking price. Meanwhile, in 2015, Charlotte Thomson bought a similar facility in Charlestown for £115K. However, this latest sale of a loo with a view must surely take the throne for the most expensive toilet ever sold in Cornwall.
