A house fire in Newton Abbot is believed to have been started deliberately. The fire service said that two dogs and two cats were rescued from the burning building while three people were treated by paramedics.
Fire crews from Torquay and Newton Abbot were called to the blaze at around 11.20am this morning (March 30). They arrived to find a property well alight, and although the people that were inside had managed to get out, there were pets still in the building.
The firefighters used breathing apparatus to rescue two dogs and two cats from inside. The animals were given pet therapy masks to receive oxygen.

The blaze was eventually extinguished by two hose reel jets before two positive pressure fans were used to clear the building of smoke. The fire crews eventually left the scene by 3.15pm.
According to the fire service, the cause of the fire was deliberate ignition. The porch and front door of the property were severely damaged while the rest of the building sustained smoke damage.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews attended a domestic property fire which was well alight on arrival. All persons were accounted for, but pets were still in the building.
"Crews donned breathing apparatus and rescued two dogs and two cats from the property. Pet therapy masks were used to give oxygen to the animals.
"Crews put the fire out using two hose reel jets. Two positive pressure fans were used to clear the property of smoke. Paramedics also attended and treated three adults for smoke inhalation.
"The cause of the fire was deliberate ignition. The property was severely damaged at the porch and front door, with the rest of the property sustaining smoke damage."
