If you've been missing the sparkle and magic of Christmas, there's an experience at one of Devon's most beautiful gardens that will transport you into a wondrous world where excitement awaits you at every turn. The Wonderglow light trail at Dartington Estate gives you a chance to view the grounds in an upside-down, topsy turvy Lewis Carroll-inspired way.
Dartington Hall's grounds are already one of Devon's unsung and hidden beauties and are spectacular in their own right during daylight hours. The Grade II listed 26-acre estate is simply a tranquil paradise with pathways strewn across the beautifully sculpted gardens. It’s great for adventurous kids to explore as well as a treat for the senses for adults with ancient trees and impressive plants everywhere you look.
It's therefore the perfect setting to create a mysterious, magical setting for an Alice in Wonderland-themed trail of lights that will wow even the oldest grandparent in your group.

But of course, these events are aimed at the children. There are staff on every corner to welcome you and your little one(s). It's then through the keyhole and onto an adventure, following the clearly signed paths. Lights are at your every turn, from illuminated tunnels, lit crowns, clocks and colourful beams rising into the sky. You'll see the Mad Hatter's tea party scene, the grinning Cheshire cat and a steward will warn you not to wake the sleeping rabbit who is tucked up in his little house.
The ambient music adds to the sense of magic and mystery. There is literally something to see at every turn, and if you time it right to coincide with a clear night, a starry sky just adds to the atmosphere.
You can grab refreshments and play a spot of croquet complete with glowing balls at the start.
And deep into your journey you have the chance to stop and have a cup of tea with Alice herself. She will take a special interest in your little one, even if - like mine - they are a bit unsure of what is going on around them (she was a little spooked by the Cheshire Cat).
You know it's going to be good when you find out it was created by the same people behind the Polar Express Train at South Devon Railway. And it's great value - the website says the average time it takes to do the trail is 45 minutes. I can't recall how long it took us but it certainly was not a five-minute wonder. And you can go around as many times as you like. It really is pure magic.
Parking is free after 6pm. And do wear sensible footwear.
Wonderglow tickets are available every evening until April 13. Under threes go free but all other tickets start from £14.95. For more information, click here.
