Timekeepers of tomorrow as Willowbank students sync with science
Willowbank Primary’s British Science Week was a momentous journey through time, where every second counted in the pursuit of knowledge
Children at Willowbank Primary in Cullompton didn’t just pass the time during British Science Week; they crafted it, measured it, and even sang about it in a symphony of educational activities.
Year 3 and 4 teacher Lizzie Playford explained: "We delved into the fascinating world of timekeeping and its impact on science," Playford said. "The Science Week assembly featured Haydn's Clock Symphony, followed by a historical journey through the evolution of time measurement.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to connect the development of timekeeping with our curriculum in history, science, math, design and technology, and geography."
A school-wide poster competition challenged students to research and showcase interesting facts about time. Even the school's toddler group, Saplings, got in on the action, creating their clocks and singing time-themed songs.
"We also encouraged creativity at home," Playford continued. Students designed clocks for their bedrooms, built sundials, and even crafted timers using glitter to measure three minutes."
Playford highlighted the project's positive impact on students' perceptions of science. "Freddie was excited to learn that scientists work internationally," she said. "Jackson found the idea of scientists creating products like shower gel fascinating. Musab particularly enjoyed discovering that the best scientists use knowledge from all subjects to solve problems in innovative ways."
"British Science Week at Willowbank was a smashing success." Playford concluded.
