Bideford residents have thrown their support around the transformation of a dilipdated eyesore into a thriving new neighbourhood.
Brunswick Wharf is set for a radical transformation. A revised planning application has been submitted to Torridge District Council and the majority of the public - close to 80 per cent - following a recent public consultation by developers Red Earth think the latest proposals looks better than one previously mooted. Many also believe the regeneration as a whole will have a positive impact on Bideford and East-the-Water.
Red Earth invited members of the public to give their views on the updated plans - that include increased open space through the development, improved accessibility for the public spaces which link with the retail units, provision for a café, riverside walk and more accommodation, as well as the introduction of a surface level car park that will also serve as a space for outdoor events. The consultation, which took place at The Royal Hotel in Bideford, gave people the opportunity to see the updated plans.

Comments received from the consultation included: “I am very impressed with Red Earth putting the community first with this project. Red Earth are ensuring all Bidefordians are reassured, and any queries raised are answered, professionally. This has clearly been proven through various means. The community has been kept up to date on a regular basis, something many developers lack. I look forward to further progress, which will also provide opportunities for local businesses and completion of this project.”
“I’m really hopeful that this regeneration will kickstart investment which is needed into Bideford! I can’t wait to see the finished result. The afternoon and evening sun always shines on East the Water. If the development is done correctly, it should be buzzing. The cafe’s, bars and restaurants will be heaving.”
Red Earth has worked hard to involve the community in its decision making and keep them informed throughout the project so far. The scheme also includes environmental improvements including more greenspace with a higher biodiversity value and much reduced carbon emissions. The developer is also proposing changes to the buildings, including variations in the roof pitches that are more sympathetic to the history of the site, and reprovision of the admired ‘I.M. Baker’ plaque on the Brunswick Wharf building next to the Long Bridge.
Simon Friend from Red Earth says: “We are delighted with both the response to our public consultation and for the support we have received from the public. We truly value the opinions of local people who have shown great patience with us as we continue in our commitment to deliver this regeneration scheme that will further enhance Bideford’s riverfront for generations to come.
Mr Friend adds: “We have listened to the feedback received and incorporated changes and additional information into our proposals, which have now been finalised and submitted to Torridge District Council and we would be delighted to receive their continued support for the planning application.”
The public will now have another opportunity to comment on the proposals as part of the council’s public consultation.
