Uffculme Green Team weaves environmental awareness into art
Uffculme Green Team is turning trash into treasure, inspiring a litter-free lifestyle through innovative art and community action
Uffculme villagers headed out with their litter-pickers and black sacks in a day of action on rubbish.
The Uffculme Green Team, has held a community action day filled with activities aimed at promoting environmental awareness and community engagement on Saturday, March 23.
Jenny Fruitbat from the Uffculme Green Team said: “We’ve got our community litter pick going on and a junk art event, which is the first one we’ve ever done,” she said. “We’re weaving shapes out of willow and using single-use plastic to decorate them, to draw people’s attention to how much single-use plastic litter is around.”
The team’s innovative approach to raising awareness about the environmental impact of single-use plastics involved creating art installations around the village.
“We’re hoping to get these hearts up around the village with messages about loving a litter-free Uffculme,” Fruitbat explained.
“We want to get people to think about the plastic they use, to think about alternatives, and to think about where they can recycle. And certainly, not to drop any litter.”
This year marks a significant milestone for the Uffculme Green Team. “It’s our tenth anniversary this year,” Fruitbat said.
“On May 11, we’ve got our really big celebration day. We’ll be doing much more junk art, showcasing all our projects. We’ll be having fun, getting outside, doing nature activities, and celebrating what has been achieved in the last ten years.”
